You Belong With Me

Even at a young age, you loved the piano. You had CDs and tapes of famous piano players. You would watch people play any chance you got. It was just simply amazing to you.

And finally, one day after you had turned 7, your mother took you to your first piano lesson. The room was empty other than the piano, the bench and a small table and chair next to it. On the table sat a tray of tiny cakes and a pot of tea and two cups. “I’ll be back to pick you up in an hour.” Your mother said kissing your cheek as she walked away.

Soon a man entered the room. He was dressed so perfectly. His hair shaped his face but had a stubborn curl at the top. He gave you a stern look at first, you look right up at him, a bit of pink on your cheek. “Hello sir. Are you the one teaching me how to play the piano?”

“Yes I am.” He answered, with a bit of an accent laced in his words. “You must be (Name). I am Roderich Edelstein.”

“Thank for teaching me Mr. Edelstein sir! I love the piano!” You smiled brightly up at him.

A small smile crept over his features. “As do I. Let us begin.” He sat down on the bench and motioned you to take a seat next to him. Once you were seat he began to play. “This song is called ‘You Belong With Me’ it will be the first one I will teach you.”

……

Roderich circled the piano as you played the song he had placed in front of you moments before. He wanted you to try the song, he wanted to see how you would do once you reached a certain point, testing you and your skills.

Your fingers swiftly played across the ivory keys, hitting the notes perfectly. Roderich stopped, hearing that you were close to the difficult part of the song. He chuckled a bit as he saw your eyes go wide on seeing the notes.

But you didn’t stop. You held your breath playing through the difficult song. Your fingers rapidly playing the sixteenth notes and faster. Your feet hit the pedals softly until the end of the song came and the difficult [art was over, you ended the song gracefully, and once you were done you gasped for the needed air you had been depriving yourself of.

“Very good (Name).” Roderich clapped. “But you do know that you can breath while playing the song right?”

Pink tinted across your cheeks. “I know Mr. Edelstein, I just got nervous when I saw that really fast part.” You smiled up at him. Though he was much older than you, and a bit strict at times, you couldn’t help but to have a little school girl crush on him.

“Well I wasn’t expecting you to get it on your first try. You never cease to amaze me.” He smiled and sat down at the table with the small cakes and tea. “You can take a break if you like.” He said motioning to the other seat across from him.

You nodded and got up from the piano bench to take a seat at the table. He poured you a cup of tea, though you hated it. You just didn’t want to tell him that. “Thank you.” You smiled.

“Now that you are a bit older I figured I would introduce the harder material to you. Do you think you are ready?” He asked.

You set the tea cup down and smiled brightly. “Yes! I do think so!”

He chuckled lightly. “Good then. I know your natural talent will allow you to exceed my expectations.”

But it wasn’t all natural talent. You worked night and day practicing. To you, failing in front of Roderich was the worst thing that could ever happen to you. So at school, you skipped recess to use the school’s piano. At home, you used your neighbor lady’s piano, she enjoyed your company for she had been alone for years.

And as the years went by, you got better and better and Roderich praised you for your skills. Which only made you love him more…

…….

“Mom, I think I’m going to go to college to be a music teacher.” You said one day. You were a senior in high school at this time, you always played the piano for the musicals, plays and concerts.

“I think that is the best choice for you.” She smiled. “Be sure to thank Mr. Edelstein for all he has done for you.”

“Don’t worry. I will!” You smiled grabbing your back pack and heading out the door to school. After school you would go to Roderich’s to practice with him. And to tell him your news… though the though of leaving for college pained you… leaving Roderich.

At school you were in one of two places. The music room at the piano, or in the office of your advisor looking for colleges that would be good for you. Right now was the music room. You played and played until the material you needed to practice was done. You sat there for a moment looking at the ivory and black keys. Thinking of what college would be like, and how you would tell Rodeerich. You still had the rest of the year to make up your mind, but that time goes fast…

You began to play ‘You Belong With Me’, it was the first song you ever learned, and you knew it by heart, you didn’t even have to look at the keys or your fingers. You closed your eyes, and began to play.

……

The months went by, you had gotten accepted into the college of your dreams so you could become a music teacher. But the thing was. You haven’t told Roderich yet. It was the day before Graduation day… you dove to Roderich’s house and knocked on the door. He answered almost immediately letting you in with a warm smile.

“Graduation day is tomorrow.” He started. “I can’t believe you have been my student for more than 10 years. You have grown up so much since our first lesson.”

You giggled a bit with a slight blush. “And you don’t even look like you’ve aged a day in the last 10 years.”

He paused what he was doing, his smile faded. “Yes well, I do like to take care of myself.” He said a bit monotone which seemed odd to you.

“How about we play a duet together.” You smiled, hoping that the idea would cheer him up.

“I suppose we could do that.” He said sitting on the bench, you sat down next to him loving how close the two of you were. Your school girl crush blossomed into something more especially the last few years, though you knew he was much older and the whole idea was probably wrong.

He seemed a bit happier after the two of you started playing. Your hands barely touching each others as you went to tap keys that were placed close together. When your little duet came to an end, and the room was silent for the time being, you took this opportunity to tell Roderich about going to college.

You looked up at him, and he continued to look at the piano keys. “Mr. Edelstein, I’m going to college this fall…” You started which got his attention. “I’m going to become a music teacher.”

“That’s wonderful (Name).” He smiled and finally looked at you. “You will be an amazing music teacher.”

“You really think so? Do you think I will be as amazing as you are?” You asked.

“I am not amazing. I just simply am a lover of music.”

“I-I… I’m going to miss you… Mr. Edelstein…” You said quietly looking away as your cheeks heated up.

“As will I (Name), be sure to stop by when you come home for visits.”

“You know I will.” You said, and the silence hit again. The two of you sat at the piano bench for a while, you traced your fingers over the keys remembering the first time you touched them. You tapped a few of them letting the sound echo through the silent room. And then you began to play it. ‘You Belong With Me’. Roderich watched you as you played it slowly. He watched your eyes close, and a soft smile play across your lips. It was the first song he ever taught you. He watched your fingers dance across the keys, your shoulders move slightly as your arms move to reach the further keys, your steady breathing. He watched you until the song ended, you opened your eyes to meet his gaze as you looked up at him.

“You have become, a very beautiful young woman (Name).” He said quietly.

“T-Thank you… M-Mr. Edelstein…”

“Please. You can call me Roderich, there is no need for formalities any longer.”

You gulped as he inched his face closer. “A-Alright… Roderich..”

He got so close to your face and you panicked, you scooted back on the bench so far that you began to fall off the edge of it. You let out a high pitched squeal as your eyes widened locking with Roderich’s just as surprised ones. In the panic you reached for him hoping he would catch you before you fell but all you could grab was his cravat pulling him down to the floor with you, and him landing on top.

“A-Are you alright (Name)?” He asked, his four arms holding him above you.

You still held onto his cravat tightly. “Y-Yes… and you?”

“I am fine.” He said as he tried to sit up but was stopped by the fact you still had a hold of him. You pulled him back down forcefully making his lips crash to yours. You let go of his cravat and wrapped your arms around him, the initial shock left Roderich and his eyes slowly closed. Some time passed, you weren’t really sure how long though, before the two of you broke away breathing a bit heavily. “You will come back won’t you?” He asked.

“Of course I will. I belong with you…”

………

Well, getting home for visits became difficult. The first two weeks of college your car broke down, you didn’t have the money and your mother didn’t, you refused all help or money from Roderich, not wanting to burden him with your situation, though you really wanted to see him.

Time went by and you never questioned why he never looked his age. You finished your first year, and then a second. Until you were done, a degree on hand and a future full of opportunities.

You hadn’t seen Roderich in some time. You decided to surprise him. So, you took a bus home. When you reached his house you knocked eagerly. To your surprise a woman answered the door. “Hello?” She smiled.

“Um.. hi…” You said a bit timidly. “I’m looking for Roderich. Dose he still live here?”

“Oh my! You must be (Name)! Come in! Come in!” She rushed you in. “He’s in there.” She pointed to the very music room where you spent all your time with him.

You approached the door and listened, the familiar tune filled your ears. You opened the door and stepped in. Roderich immediately stopped playing. “Hungary, I told you I wanted to be alone.” He scoffed. Confused, you walked in further. “Hungary I-!” He stopped once he turned to face you. “(Name)?”

“I am very confused right now Roderich, but I can assure you that I am here to stay, if that is what you want.”

“Of course it is (Name), because you belong with me.”
